Who was Zheng Chenggong? Why do people in the Taiwan region honor him as "The Sage King who Recovered Taiwan"? Why do people from Fujian and the Taiwan region, come together every year to commemorate him? The story begins more than 300 years ago. A hero set sail from Yanping in Fujian, crossed the Taiwan Strait, reclaimed the Taiwan region after 38 years of Dutch colonial rule, and brought with him Chinese culture, institutions, and hope. Today, people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait gather once again at the place where his journey began—not simply to look back on history, but to carry its legacy forward. History offers the clearest testimony: people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait have always been one family.
